What is a Caregiver and What Do They Do?

A simple response to this question would be to say that a caregiver is someone who takes care of someone else.  But, is it really this simple?

My Definition of Caregiver

To me, a caregiver is a selfless superhero who often places his or her own life on hold in order to care for someone else who is unable to care for him or herself.  A caregiver is often the sole provider for their loved one.  They “care” for virtually everything!

Typical Caregiver Responsibilities

For example, caregivers are often responsible for:

  • daily meals, often with strict nutritional requirements;
  • proper dosage and timing of medication, possibly administering shots;
  • health requirements, such as regular blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring;
  • tending to and cleaning wounds, surgical sites, and bed sores;
  • doctor’s appointments;
  • bathing and grooming;
  • personal banking;
  • personal and business paperwork;
  • medical paperwork;
  • insurance paperwork and claims;
  • attention to mental and physical changes;
  • estate planning; and,
  • keeping family members informed.

To name only a few!

My husband, Ken, passed away in 2004 after a courageous battle with Cancer.  While taking care of Ken, I can attest to performing almost all of the responsibilities listed above…and some that aren’t even listed.  Today, I look back and wonder how I was ever able to get everything done WHILE working two jobs, taking care of our house and vehicles, and handling our daughter’s school activities.

The fact is, for me, two things contributed to my ability to tackle everything and still remain sane.  My love for Ken and my faith and hope in God.

Without these two things, I would have been lost.  But, the Lord was with me every step of the way.  As we read in Philippians 4:13 [NASB], “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”  And, strengthen me He did!

Caregivers are LoveGivers!

To summarize, caregivers are responsible for the everyday care and welfare of their loved one.  However, I prefer to think of them as “lovegivers” because this is what they do every single day.  They shower love upon those they care for and do so unconditionally, without complaining, and for as long as it takes.  They are truly unsung heroes.

Keep looking up,
