Life coaching is one of the fastest growing industries today. Life coaching presents itself in an assortment of niches, one of which is grief and loss coaching.
I would venture to say, based on internet searches and talking to other coaches, that grief and loss coaches are not as prevalent as, say, business coaches, weight loss coaches, executive coaches, etc. This is likely because of the subject matter and, frankly, because many people have a tendency to shy away from death-related emotions like sorrow and grief.
It takes someone who has experienced grief and loss to be able to delve into people’s sorrow and help them to emerge better on the other side.
What Does a Grief Coach Do?
The short (All right, maybe not so short.) answer is that grief coaching consists of two people – you, the client, and a coach – who are aligned to discover your objectives and values in order to create goals so you may achieve the life or outcome that you desire. Grief Coaching is NOT consulting, mentoring, advice, therapy, or counseling.
The grief coach will guide you, with powerful and thought-provoking questions and other appropriate methods, in order to discover what is currently taking place in your life and/or thoughts that are preventing you from moving forward. Once the issues are clear, you, with the assistance of your grief coach, will work to remove these barriers and will determine the steps forward to achieve your goals.
This process can sometimes be painful and there will likely be tears. However, the main objective is to help you take small steps forward and, as you gain momentum, to be sure the steps turn into purposeful, directed strides.
Who Needs a Grief and Loss Coach?
If you are grieving the loss of a loved one and finding it hard to move forward, you might want to seek out a grief and loss coach.
If you are grieving the loss of a beloved pet, it might be beneficial to work with a grief and loss coach.
If you have lost something that was dear to you, for instance your health, a home you were emotionally attached to, the career of your dreams, or all of your retirement funds, a grief and loss coach may be able to help.
Grief is a Long, Hard Journey if Done Alone
On average and left alone, reports indicate that it takes approximately five to eight years to recover from a catastrophic loss, such as the loss of a spouse or child. For this reason and others, people have started to seek the assistance of compassionate and competent grief coaches who can help to alleviate the pain and heartbreak which accompanies extreme loss. With the help of a grief and loss coach, this time may be shortened significantly, depending upon the client and circumstances.
Many people get “stuck” when they experience a traumatic loss, unable to return to their old lives and, also, unable to move forward. A grief and loss coach will help to alleviate the emotional pain, thereby helping the client to move forward to reclaim his or her life.
